Asian BMI and waist check

BMI and waist size, read against the cut-offs used in Malaysia, which are lower than the standard Western ones.

Asian BMI and waist check

Malaysia's Ministry of Health uses lower BMI and waist cut-offs than Western charts, because risk rises earlier in Asian adults. Enter your measurements below.

FAQs

What are the Malaysian BMI cut-offs?

The Malaysian MOH Clinical Practice Guidelines on Management of Obesity (2nd edition, 2023) use Asian cut-offs: below 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 22.9 normal, 23 to 27.4 overweight, and 27.5 or above obese. They are lower than the Western 25 and 30 because Asians tend to carry more body fat and metabolic risk at a lower BMI.

What waist size is too high?

The same MOH guideline flags a waist of 90 cm or more in men and 80 cm or more in women as abdominal obesity. Measure at the level of the navel, standing, after a normal breath out.

Can BMI mislead me?

Yes. BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, so a muscular person can read as overweight, and an older adult with low muscle can read as normal while carrying excess belly fat. This is why the waist matters, and why waist-to-height is worth checking too.

What should I do with a high result?

Combine resistance training two to three days a week with regular walking or cycling, and review portions of rice, noodles and sweet drinks. See a doctor if your BMI is 27.5 or above, or if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
